Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

A big welcome to Luci Montgomery and her family!

This week I'll be sending home the new WordMasters words and some information.  Please take a minute to go over the previous test and read the information I've sent home.  I read the book, Make it Stick, over break and it prompted some new ideas and a somewhat new approach.

Also, beginning on January 5th, we will start our band and orchestra rotation.  It is every day from January 5-26, from 9:40-10:10.  At the end of the orchestra rotation you'll be invited to come and see all that your child has learned.  You will get more information as the time approaches.

A note about math

Dear Parents:
At the end of this week, your child's first semester progress report will arrive in your homes.  It's always a great time to reflect on all that our student's have accomplished . . . both as learners, friends, and classroom citizens.  You may notice that there are several markers in the Mathematics section of the report that are marked as "not introduced".  As you know, we've shifted our curriculum to Math In Focus (MIF), which has a different emphasis in content and sequence.  We will be revising the math section of our progress report for next year, giving us this year to implement MIF and identify our priority learning objectives in the curriculum.  Please refer to the narrative comments to gauge your child's progress in math this year.

December updates and a bit about January

Happy Holidays to all!

I just wanted to update you on a few things...our WordMasters test is tomorrow!  The children seem to be excited and well-prepared.  Thank you for all of the practice you've done at home!

Next Wednesday IS a Leadership Day - the students should wear their CARE shirts.

Next Thursday is the Winter Program from 6:30-7:30.  Please have the children in the room between 6:00 and 6:15.  After the program they should come back to the room and you should pick them up here, in our room.

Next Friday is a non-uniform day!  I will be absent Friday morning, as my daughter Leah, is graduating from University of Minnesota, with her Masters of Science in Occupational Therapy (I'm a little proud!).  I will be around in the afternoon.  Mrs. Hegg will be here in the morning.

The Thursday after we return from Winter Break, we begin our month long Band and Orchestra rotation.  The children have the opportunity to try out band and orchestra with Mrs. Wheeler and Mrs. Laureano, respectively. Class will be from 9:45-10:20 every day. They will bring home instruments and will be expected to practice.  Orchestra usually has a little recital at the end of each rotation at the normal class time.  More information will be forthcoming from the teachers.

I hope you enjoy a joy-filled break with people you love, engaged in the activities you love!

My best,
Kim

The date of our WordMasters test is now Friday, December 9th!!

We will continue to practice the words at school. Please continue to practice them at home!

Fourth Grade Math Update

               abt_us_5.jpg

In earlier grades, students learned the multiplication tables up to
10 × 10, and the related and division facts. Now, in Chapter 3, they will advance to multiplying and dividing multi-digit numbers. Hence, it is a good idea to revisit multiplication and division facts so that students recall them easily. Place-value concepts are used in multiplication and division. When students multiply or divide numbers with or without regrouping, a place-value chart is used to facilitate understanding in the beginning. Students should be able to multiply and divide using the vertical form by the end of the lesson.

Having mastered the skills in multiplication and division, students will apply what they have learned to solve real-world problems. They are also required to apply addition and subtraction strategies. Again, estimation (which students learned in Chapter 2) may be used to check that the answers are reasonable.

Some important notes and dates!

*Math Night is Tuesday, October 18 at 6:30pm in the Chapel. For parents who
are unable to attend, the presentation will be videotaped and posted on the parent
page of our website.
*Picture retakes are Monday, October 17.
*Stand up Against Bullying on Wednesday, October 19!  It is “Wear Orange”
casual day for all.
*No school on October 20-21  (Faculty Workshop)
*Halloween is Monday, October 31!  We will have our annual parade of costumes
beginning at 8:40am.  Parents are invited to the Anderson Gym for the festivities.

Costumes should be school-appropriate (no weapons, scary objects, or face paint)

I would really like to have the students at conferences with us.  They will lead the first part of the conference and then will be excused for the second half (unless we need them there the entire time). In 4th grade it's imperative that they understand that their learning is positively impacted by their participation.  Of course, if this isn't possible, I understand.

I understand that some of you may have been having trouble getting the Scholastic book web site to recognize my code.  Try this:www.scholastic.com/bookclubs
You should be able to simply enter the code: LGXWQ to place an order.

Here are a few pictures from our adventures in STEAM class ...

A few notes!

Please note that Monday is picture day!  We are hoping to get our Travel Journals out this week.  If you haven't returned your envelope please do so as soon as possible!

We've changed our biddying schedule and won't begin biddying until the end of October.  At that point we will biddy on days 1, 3, and 5.  This means we will be eating lunch with the preschoolers and kindergartners from 11:10-11:50.

As always, if you have any questions, feel free to email or call me.

Thanks!
Kim

What a great week!!

What a fantastic first week of school!  I can tell already that it is going to be a wonderful year.  We ended our week with a little group work - the kids did a great job working together to save Fred.  Ask them to explain.

This week begins with Convocation and the students will also get their computers.  The computers won't start coming home until mid-October at the earliest, but it's still quite exciting.  Also, Thursday night is the Lower School Back to School night.  A great deal of information is given out that night and I hope to see you all there.  Please let me know if you are unable to attend.

Thank you for sending me such amazing children!
Kim
